The Harrison Trek for children in Nepal

SUNDAY JUNE 20th 2010

The 2009 Harrison trek for children in Nepal took place on Saturday June 20th and the Yorkshire fundraisers got a fitting send-off when a piper from the York-based Ghurkha regiment led them on their 15 mile trek from Castle Howard.

It is the second year that York company S Harrison Developments Ltd has sponsored the successful event. Trustee Colin Culley and the Yorkshire Support Group (Chris Hearn, Colin Linley, Janet Locke, Roger Othick, Maggie Walsh, Andrew Thomson, Sandra Culley, Jack Walton, Therese Walton), organised the event  and raised important funds to support New Futures Nepal projects, in particularly the orphaned, disabled and disadvantaged children in one of the poorest countries in the world.

The 2009 Trek attracted over 350 walkers, almost double last year’s total. From this support we are delighted to announce we have raised and amazing

Our thanks to everyone who helped of participated..

Fundraisers came from across the county and beyond to enjoy one of three walks – of 2, 5 and 15 miles in and around the grounds of North Yorkshire’s famous stately home.  All the walks finished in the grounds of Castle Howard, where participants were able to enjoy the wonderful surroundings adding a special touch to what had been quite an exhilarating day before returning the base camp. The York based Gurkha Regiment provided support both in the base camp as well as out on the walks where visitors were able to meet and talk to them personally. They also provided traditional Nepal craft and food stalls, Nepali meals, staffed by families of Ghurkha soldiers based in York.

Martyn Harrison whose family joined him on the trek said: “The New Futures Nepal team have managed to create a real carnival atmosphere at base camp. Those participating were not only raising funds for a very worthy cause; they were clearly having great fun doing it at what is a truly child-friendly event.”

Earlier this summer both celebrity campaigner Joanna Lumley and Archbishop John Sentamu pledged their support for the trek and for the work of the charity.
